About WagerLab
At WagerLab, we’re building the future of social sports entertainment. Our app lets friends compete, track picks, and experience the thrill of sports betting — without the risk or complexity of real-money wagering.
Our platform supports:
- Social bets and head-to-head challenges between friends
- Pick’em pools and group competitions
- Odds-based predictions using real sportsbook lines
- 40+ sports and hundreds of leagues worldwide
We’re not a sportsbook. We’re a social gaming platform where the competition, bragging rights, and community matter more than the money.
But for that experience to feel authentic, we needed real odds — the same lines serious bettors see at major sportsbooks.

The Challenge: Odds Data That Doesn’t Break the Bank
Our Requirements Were Simple (But Hard to Find)
When we started building WagerLab, we knew odds data would be critical to our user experience. We needed:
- Accurate, market-reflective odds that users would recognize and trust
- Broad sports coverage — not just NFL and NBA, but niche leagues too
- Hundreds of betting markets — spreads, totals, props, alternates
- Results data to automatically settle bets
- Pricing that scales with our business, not against it
Sounds reasonable, right?
The Reality: Most Odds APIs Weren’t Built for Apps Like Ours
As we evaluated providers, we ran into the same problems over and over:
Problem #1: Pricing That Penalizes Growth
Most providers charge per event and per market. That meant:
- Adding player props would triple our costs overnight
- We’d have to choose between rich data and staying in budget
Problem #2: Limited Coverage
Many providers focused only on major U.S. sports. But our users wanted:
- International soccer leagues
- Combat sports (UFC, boxing)
- Esports and niche sports
- College sports beyond the top 25
We’d need multiple providers to cover what we wanted to build.
Problem #3: Odds Without Results
Displaying odds is only half the battle. We also needed to settle bets automatically when games ended.
Most odds APIs either:
- Didn’t provide results data at all
- Charged separately for it
- Required us to integrate a second provider
Managing multiple data sources wasn’t sustainable for our small team. (Initially solo team)
Problem #4: Single-Book Bias
Some APIs pulled from just one sportsbook. The problem?
When users saw odds that didn’t match what they saw on FanDuel or DraftKings, they questioned our credibility. We needed consensus odds that reflected the actual market.
Why We Chose SportsGameOdds
After months of evaluation, trying different odds apis, combining different sources, trying to build our own odds API, we stumbled upon SportsGameOdds being mentioned in a Reddit thread— and it solved every problem we’d been hitting.
1. Pricing That Actually Makes Sense
SportsGameOdds charges per event, not per market.
That one difference changed everything:
- 10 NFL games = 10 API objects — regardless of how many markets each game has. Most other API charge per event market – so an NFL game with 100 markets is 100 objects, you end up racking up a massive monthly bill.
- Whether we pull moneylines only or 300+ player props, the cost is the same
- We can say “yes” to feature requests without budget anxiety
2. Consensus Odds We Can Trust
SportsGameOdds aggregates odds from 40+ major sportsbooks including:
- DraftKings
- FanDuel
- BetMGM
- Caesars
- Circa Odds
- Fanatics
- And more
This gives us:
- Fair, market-reflective lines instead of single-book bias
- Credibility with users who recognize these odds from major books
- Consistency across all our features
When users see our odds, they know they’re getting the real market — not some outlier book’s lines.
3. Massive Sports Coverage
We scaled to 20+ sports and 50+ leagues, including:
Major North American Sports:
- NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, MLS
- NCAAF, NCAAB
International Soccer:
- Premier League, La Liga, Bundesliga, Serie A
- Champions League, Europa League
Combat Sports:
- UFC
Niche & Emerging Sports:
- Cricket, rugby, Australian rules football
- Handball
This coverage let us:
- Launch globally
- Add new sports in hours (not weeks)
- Say “yes” when users requested niche leagues
- Differentiate from competitors with limited coverage
4. Odds + Results in One API
SportsGameOdds provides everything we need in one place:
- Pre-game odds for displaying betting lines
- Live odds updates during games
- Results & scores for automatic bet settlement
- Historical data for user stats and analytics
This all-in-one approach meant:
- One integration instead of three
- One vendor relationship instead of multiple
- Consistent data quality across the entire user journey
- 99.9% settlement accuracy with automated results
5. Developer Experience That Doesn’t Suck
As a small engineering team/solo developer, we didn’t have time to fight bad documentation or slow support.
SportsGameOdds delivered:
- Clear REST API with intuitive endpoints
- Excellent documentation with real examples
- Fast response times
- Responsive support (usually same-day responses)
- Generous rate limits (300 requests/min on our plan)
- 99.9% uptime since we launched
We integrated in 2 weeks and haven’t had a single major issue since going live.

Our Integration Approach
Here’s how we built WagerLab on top of SportsGameOdds:
Architecture Overview
- Scheduled Jobs (every 15 minutes)
- Fetch upcoming events via /events endpoint
- Pull consensus odds via /odds endpoint
- Normalize & cache in Redis
- Serve to mobile app via our API
- Monitor /scores endpoint for results
- Auto-settle bets when games complete
Key Endpoints We Use
/events — Upcoming games and schedules
- Powers our “Browse Games” screen
- Filtered by sport, league, date range
- Updated every 15 minutes
/odds — Fast consensus odds
- All betting markets (spreads, totals, props, alternates)
- Updated every 1-2 minutes during active games
/scores — Live scores and final results
- Near real-time score updates
- Game status (scheduled, live, final, postponed)
- Triggers our automated settlement system
Caching Strategy
We cache odds data in Redis with smart TTLs:
- Pre-game odds: 5-minute cache
- Live odds: 2-minute cache
- Results: 30-second cache
- Historical data: 24-hour cache
This gives us:
- Fast response times for users (<50ms)
- Efficient API usage
- Fresh data when it matters
Development Time Breakdown
| Phase | Time Investment |
| Initial API integration | 1 week |
| Data normalization & caching | 3 days |
| Settlement automation | 4 days |
| Testing & QA | 2 days |
| Total to production | ~2 weeks |
Compare that to the 6-12 months it would’ve taken to build our own odds aggregation system (not to mention ongoing maintenance).

What We Learned
1. Pricing Model Matters More Than Price
We found cheaper APIs that would’ve cost us 10x more at scale. Event-based pricing was the only model that made sense for a consumer app pulling hundreds of markets.
2. Consensus > Single Book
Users trust odds they recognize. Consensus odds from 15+ books gave us instant credibility vs. showing lines from one random sportsbook.
3. Coverage Is a Competitive Advantage
Being able to say “yes” to user requests for niche sports and leagues has been huge for engagement. We’re not limited by our data provider.
4. Results Data Is Non-Negotiable
Manually settling bets doesn’t scale. Having results in the same API as odds saved us from building complex multi-provider integrations.
5. Developer Experience Accelerates Everything
Clear docs, fast responses, and reliable uptime meant we spent time building features, not debugging data issues.
Advice for Other Founders
If you’re building a social betting, prediction, or sports prediction app, here’s what we’d tell you:
Do This
- Start with event-based pricing — per-market pricing will kill you at scale
- Choose a provider with results data included
- Test the API before committing — developer experience matters
- Think globally — international coverage opens new markets
Avoid This
- Don’t build your own odds aggregation — it’s way harder than it looks
- Don’t choose based on launch pricing — model your Year 2-3 costs
- Don’t skimp on data quality — users notice bad odds immediately
- Don’t use multiple providers unless absolutely necessary — complexity compounds
- Don’t ignore settlement — results data is just as important as odds
